President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) says Taiwan is committed to promoting gender equality in government, business, society, and sports. Tsai made the comments during a ceremony at the Taiwan-USA Collaboration on Building the Asia-Pacific Gender Equality in Sports Exchange Platform on Friday.
The forum is co-sponsored by the American Institute in Taiwan and the U.S. State Department’s Global Sports Mentoring Program. The forum gave out a number of awards for sports photography focused on women athletes. It also brought together experts from various fields to discuss issues of gender in sports.
Tsai says Taiwan has seen substantial progress on gender equality in sports in recent years. Many women athletes from Taiwan have been winning international competitions, such as Olympic gold medalist and weightlifter Kuo Hsing-Chun (郭婞淳) and record-breaking badminton player Tai Tzu-Ying (戴資穎) .
Tsai thanks the numerous NGOs, athletes, and legislators for their tireless efforts in promoting gender equality. Tsai says Taiwan looks forward to working further with international partners to promote equality in sports.
