Taiwan is planning to raise salaries for military and public education personnel in 2024. Taiwan’s Comptroller Chu Tse-min (朱澤民) addressed concerns on Monday that this adjustment is catering to certain population groups during an election year.
Chu says the Directorate General of Personnel Administration (DGPA) determines the salary raises for military and public education staff and reports them to the government. The report is based on a comprehensive evaluation of various indicators, including economic conditions, standard of living, and other factors. He says election considerations are irrelevant to the DGPA.
Chu explains that Taiwan’s exports are currently weak, though private consumption is stable. DPP Legislator Wu Ping-jui (吳秉叡) adds that living expenses have soared in the past two years and a salary adjustment is necessary.
