Nazi flags have been sighted at the entrance of Taipei European School. Officials from the European Economic and Trade Office and the Israeli Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei reported the incident to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday. Both representatives expressed their concern over the display.

The Foreign Ministry also noted that the Nazi swastika was found on Taichung First High School’s Facebook page.

The ministry says Taiwan is a democratic country and the people's freedom of expression and speech are protected by the Constitution. But it adds that these recent cases show that some people do not understand the Nazi symbol’s historical representation of racial discrimination and human rights violations.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) says he hopes Taiwan’s people will put aside hatred and show empathy for different cultures, religions, and ethnic groups in pursuit of a better future.

The ministry adds that it has co-organized the International Holocaust Remembrance Day with Israel and Germany in Taiwan on several occasions. President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has personally attended the event for three consecutive years to express her support and encourage others to remember the lessons learned during this tragedy.
