Sashimi lovers gather around because it is the bluefin tuna season at Donggang township, a fishing village in Pingtung county. Early in the morning, people are purchasing boxes of seafood and some even consume this delicacy right then and there.
Rows of bluefin tuna are lined up at the auction site, and buyers carefully assess the fish and place their bids. 140 bluefin tuna were auctioned off on Tuesday, which set a daily new record for this year.
A Donggang fishers association representative says as of Tuesday, they have sold 672 bluefin tuna in total this season.
The large catch this year also means prices are going down. Average prices per kilogram of tuna is around NT$500 (US$16). People who enjoy eating bluefin tuna can head to southern Taiwan, visit the township, and eat the fish while it's fresh and in season.
