Kuomintang (KMT) party chair Eric Chu (朱立倫) says the party will announce their “strongest” candidate for the 2024 presidential election next week. Chu made the announcement after a think tank press conference on Thursday.
There are currently two leading contenders for the KMT nomination, namely, New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜) and Foxconn founder Terry Gou (郭台銘). Chairman Chu was asked about recent opinion polling which showed that Hou was behind all other candidates from every party. Chu said he would only consider the long-term polling trends, and would be skeptical of polling agencies that have a partisan slant. Chu added that as long as the party refrains from anything that would damage unity, they are sure to win in 2024.
The KMT presidential nomination comes about a month after the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced that sitting Vice President and DPP party chair Lai Ching-te (賴清德) would be its candidate. It is expected that the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) will also nominate its chairman, former Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲).
