Taiwan’s legislature passed new amendments on Friday to establish a new department in charge of international affairs. The new department will remove the secretariat department’s responsibilities handling international affairs for the legislature.

The legislature says it recognizes the need to update its organizational structure as Taiwan is receiving a growing number of foreign delegations in recent years. Within the new department, there will be four divisions responsible for international exchange, collaboration, communication, and protocol-related affairs.

The amendment adds the new department will be expected to promote diplomacy with other countries and help Taiwan keep pace with international standards. Responsibilities for the department also include handling official participation in international events and organization, receiving foreign dignitaries, translating information for legislative diplomatic work, and other duties related to international affairs.
