The legislature voted to legalize same-sex adoption on Tuesday, four years after Taiwan passed the same-sex marriage law. The bill, amending the current same-sex marriage law, will allow gay couples to adopt children with the same rights under the Civil Code.

DPP legislator Fan Yun (范雲), who proposed the bill, says she’s grateful for the bipartisan support and local organizations’ advocacy for the amendment.

New Power Party legislator Claire Wang (王婉諭) says her party also supports same-sex adoption rights and all decisions should be made based on children’s best interest instead of parents’ marital status or sexual orientation.

Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in May 2019.
