Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday thanking the United States Congress for introducing a bipartisan bill demonstrating support for Taiwan. On Tuesday, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee introduced a bill opposing China’s efforts to interfere with Taiwan’s diplomatic engagementment and participation in international organization.
U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu says the bill, entitled the Taiwan International Solidarity Act, will further solidify the U.S.’ efforts blocking China’s false claims over Taiwan’s representation in international organizations, such as the World Health Organization.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry says the bill is intended to oppose China’s arbitrary interpretation of the U.N. Resolution 2785. It says China has been using the U.N. body and procedures to marginalize Taiwan on the international stage.
The Taiwan International Solidarity Act was sponsored by Congressman Gerry Connolly in February to amend the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act of 2019. The Foreign Ministry says Taiwan will continue to strengthen its collaboration with the U.S. and other like-minded countries and contribute to the international community.
