There is an increase in understanding of gender equality and friendliness to the transgender community among Taiwanese people. That’s according to the 2023 gender equality telephone public opinion survey conducted by the Cabinet’s Gender Equality Committee. The committee released the results on Friday.

According to the survey, over 77% of the respondents agree that transgender people should dress in ways they find comfortable in school or at the workplace, and over 94% of the respondents find no issue working with transgender people. The committee says the data is a reflection of increasing friendliness towards the transgender community among the public.

Results also show that over 54% of the respondents agree that transgender and intersex people should be allowed to register for a third gender option on their ID, and over 46% of respondents agree that transgender people should be allowed to change the gender on their ID without undergoing gender reassignment surgery.

Meanwhile, the survey also shows over 62% of respondents agree that same-sex couples should have the legal right to marry. This year’s result shows an increase by over 25% from 2018, one year before Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage.

The survey also shows that over 74% of the respondents agreed that same-sex couples should have the right to adopt children, which is up more than 20 percent from 2018.

The telephone survey was conducted from April 27 to 29 and targeted people aged 20 and above.
