Video footage from Xinfeng Township in Hsinchu County may look like a natural waterfall but it's actually a city street, as torrential rains pound northern Taiwan. Xinfeng residents joked that walking home felt like they were river tracing.
A low lying area of Baoshan Township has become a muddy river. One van driver was forced to leave his car in the middle of the water, unable to drive away.
In Zhubei Township, people waded through knee high water that accumulated overnight. Five people were trapped inside their homes and had to be evacuated, carried out by emergency workers.
Several cars were fully submerged in Zhubei. In one case three passengers had to stand on the roof of their car until they were rescued. It certainly wasn’t the kind of carpool they were hoping to drive in.
Nearly all of Zhubei’s Chongyi Village was under water. Residents woke up early and did their best to keep the water out of their homes.
Hsinchu County magistrate Yang Wen-ke (楊文科) says a total of 28 areas have been flooded.
The county government has deployed vehicles to help clear the water and return the situation to normal as soon as possible. But the sudden flooding has many asking themselves: water you going to do when the flood comes?
