A typhoon has not made landfall in Taiwan for over three years now. This makes it the longest time period without a typhoon since official records began in 1958. However, a new typhoon is on the horizon and has a chance of impacting Taiwan in the near future.
Thunder lights up the sky late at night as Central Taiwan experiences torrential rain. A transformer box was struck by lightning, causing blackouts in nearly 600 households in Changhua city. The rain, however, does not seem like it will be going anywhere because the Mawar typhoon is looming just around the corner.
A weather expert says the typhoon is expected to become a strong typhoon, but it will all come down to conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday. These two days are critical in assessing how the typhoon will impact Taiwan.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts predicts four likely scenarios the typhoon will impact Taiwan. The most likely scenario is that the typhoon will approach eastern Taiwan before turning north, bringing continuous showers to northern and eastern Taiwan. The least likely scenario is that the typhoon will make direct landfall on the coastal areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
There are many variables still at-play, and all eyes are on these next two days to see how it affects the typhoon’s development.
