Taiwan's Labor Ministry is set to relax the hiring criteria for migrant workers, and it expects the updated policy will bring an additional 28,000 workers to Taiwan. The ministry says the change will help solve the ongoing labor shortage crisis.
The new changes will apply to the manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and long-term care industries. The ministry says it will also implement incentives for employers to hire migrant workers.
Deputy Director General of the Workforce Development Agency Lai Chia-jen (賴家仁) says the usual 60-day notice period for the amendment has been reduced to just seven days with hopes to quickly meet labor demands. The period will last until May 30.
Allocations to the four industries have been formulated by the ministry, with up to 14,000 migrant workers being allocated for the long-term care industry.
Lai adds they will take public opinion into consideration when implementing the changes.
