Spring has traditionally been the season for firefly watching in Taiwan. However, a number of natural and manmade factors have resulted in significant firefly population declines in recent years. But conservation efforts to bring back fireflies in Alishan may be making progress.

Feast your eyes upon these fireflies. Their green glow against dark evening surroundings makes for a fantastical setting. Recent spring rains have allowed the firefly populations to grow, creating an unforgettable scene for visitors to Alishan.
The return of these beautiful sights is due in part to conservation efforts by the Directorate General of Highways. Their combined use of ecological construction of firefly breeding areas, as well as sustainable caretaking of the surrounding environment is showing results. The fireflies are now even reappearing on the Alishan Highway.
In order to take advantage and raise awareness of the returning firefly populations, the Alishan National Scenic Area has put together a special ecological tour. It not only includes a guided firefly viewing hike, but also a professional photographer to help clearly capture the guests and their firefly friends. You may have visited Alishan before, but if you visit this spring you may see it in a new light.
