The waters off Taiwan’s east coast are known for the diversity of their marine wildlife. This week, fishermen and whale watchers at sea were treated to some very special appearances.
Video script:
Fishermen off Taiwan’s east coast were elated by the arrival of a massive whale shark, the largest known fish species in the world. The fisherman quickly do their best to move their lines and nets to avoid entangling the massive fish, which can reach lengths of over five meters. The fishermen reach out to pet the charming animal, though experts say humans should try to avoid touching these majestic creatures if possible.
But whale sharks weren’t the only special guests on the east coast. Lucky whale watchers were also treated to the sight of more than 10 sperm whales in the waters near Hualien. Onlookers were able to witness baby and mother whales swimming together near the boat, and fluking as they return to the deep depths of the ocean.
Whale-watching boat operator Wang Teng-Yi (王登義) says the increase in sperm whale citings is related to recent typhoon activity, which tends to lead whales to swim closer to the shores of Taiwan.
So whether it's giant fish or giant mammals, now is a great time to sea for yourself what Taiwan’s east coast has to offer.
