In an interview published in The Australian earlier this month, Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said Canberra should consider sending a military attache to its representative office in Taipei, citing China’s growing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Australian Office in Taipei previously created a “Director of Strategic Affairs” position to liaise with Taiwan’s defense ministry on matters of regional security last year. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Taiwan representative office in Australia also maintains constant contact with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Wu says Taiwan would also like to station a military attache at its representative office in Australia. Wu adds that exchanging military attaches would allow both countries to share intelligence and assessments of the geopolitical situation in a systematic way. Wu says that both governments still need to discuss further on this topic and Taiwan will respect Canberra's decision on the matter.

The United States, Japan and Singapore have stationed military attaches in their de facto embassies in Taipei for decades, Wu told the newspaper.
