Several advocacy groups focused on LGBT+ and gender issues jointly released a policy white paper on Thursday, proposing more comprehensive policies to protect their communities. The paper was released just before the end of June, which is considered Pride Month.
The white paper puts forward recommendations such as implementing gender equality awareness education in schools and workplaces, protections for LGBT+ family planning, and the full liberalization of transgender and same-sex marriages.
In addition, the groups also believe that additional legal protections should be established to encourage more LGBT+ people to enter the political arena and make changes at the institutional level. Taiwan Equality Campaign manager Wong Yu Cing (翁鈺清) says she hopes that through the release of the white paper, more political parties and candidates will pay attention to these issues, creating a more equitable and pluralistic future for Taiwan.
Taiwan has been at the forefront of LGBT+ issues in Asia, becoming the first country in the region to adopt same-sex marriage in 2019.
