Following the US Department of State’s updated travel advisory recommending that Americans reconsider travel to China, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated on Thursday that a new warning has been included on their official website.

The warning emphasizes that Taiwanese travelers should carefully assess the need to go to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. The MAC reminds travelers of China’s arbitrary enforcement of local laws including those on exit bans and detentions and possible risks to their personal safety. The current yellow travel alert, which is equivalent to the US Travel Alert Level 3 Reconsider Travel, is still in place.

With the passage of the Foreign Relations Law and Counterespionage Law in China and the National Security Law in Hong Kong, the MAC states that unreasonable interrogations, illegal arrests and detention continue to occur. Taiwanese nationals are reminded to use the dynamic login system on their website before traveling to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. This platform is available so the government can provide assistance in a timely manner to travelers if needed.
