Tuvalu Governor-General Tofiga Falani and delegation arrived in Taiwan on Monday and will stay until Friday. The delegation visited The Red Cross Society of Taiwan for exchanges in areas including disaster prevention and relief, social assistance and services, first aid, and water safety education.
The Taiwan Red Cross said that since the highest point elevation in Tuvalu’s territory does not exceed 4 meters above sea level, the country’s gradual disappearance is imminent due to global warming and rising sea levels. The society said that it hopes to help Tuvalu establish more efficient response measures to prevent related problems before they happen.
Taiwan Red Cross President Wang Ching-feng (王清峰) said that this is an opportunity to cooperate and share experiences. She pointed out that as global warming continues to worsen, not only Tuvalu will be impacted by its effects. Threats including severe droughts, food shortages, and water depletion have the potential to trigger humanitarian crises around the world.
Governor-General Falani expressed gratitude for the exchanges and emphasized that professional knowledge will help improve the disaster preparedness and relief capabilities of both parties.
