Taiwan's current development for sustainability aligns well with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. That’s the word from Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2023 SDGs Asia Forum and Exposition for Sustainability on Friday morning.
Chen emphasized that sustainable development is a global issue interconnected with various topics, such as population aging, climate change, energy transition, gender equality, and labor conditions. Chen said Taiwan has put in significant effort under the Tsai administration, especially in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Chen shared that in the past five years, Taiwan’s renewable energy installed capacity has grown by 21.9%, surpassing the global average of 9.1%. As of May this year, renewable energy accounts for over 25% of the total installed capacity for power generation.
Chen also spoke on the recent power outage in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City on Wednesday. He stated that Taipower attributed the outage to equipment failure and has since restored the power supply. Chen assured the public that the government is committed to reinforcing power supply stability during summer and preventing similar incidents in the future.
