Chunghwa Post announced the introduction of four major transshipment security control measures on Sunday. The action is in response to a recent incident in which a South Korean welfare center received a transshipment package from Taiwan containing poisonous gas.

The measures include enhancing customer management, improving filtering and control of the transshipment mail system, increasing on-site inspection frequency, and taking strict action in cases of contract breaches.

Chunghwa Post Deputy Director Lin Li-fu (林立富) stated that they have requested delivery companies only accept logistics service providers and product suppliers certified by cross-border e-commerce platforms. They should not handle shipments from individual customers. Screening mechanisms have also been added to the transshipment mail-receiving system to prevent false declarations of items.

Transshipment means that overseas mail first arrives in Taiwan, and then is sent by Taiwan's Chunghwa Post to the delivery point. It is routed through Taiwan due to China's transportation limitations, making it faster and more cost-effective.

The involved courier company's mail delivery to South Korea has been suspended during the ongoing police investigation. If false declarations are confirmed, a fine of NT$150,000 (US$4780) will be imposed.
