Taiwan prepares for Typhoon Doksuri’s impact

As Typhoon Doksuri moves closer to the island, Taiwan has implemented safety protocols in preparation for the storm’s impact. The Central Emergency Operation Center met on Wednesday morning to gather the latest reports on the measures being carried out. 

Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Taitung County have set up the highest-level emergency operation centers with Kaohsiung City and Taitung County reporting that 315 people in total have been evacuated as of 9 a.m.

The National Fire Agency said that 7,691 rescue workers, 19 helicopters, 3,794 rescue vehicles and 1,126 rescue boats are on standby while the defense ministry has more than 35,000 troops ready with the necessary equipment and machinery to carry out rescue missions.

The transportation and communications ministry reported that a total of 18 routes and 127 sea crossings were suspended for marine transportation and 32 domestic flights and 4 international flights were canceled.

The Central Weather Bureau expects the periphery of the typhoon to reach the southern part of Taiwan on Wednesday afternoon bringing heavy rain as it continues to travel toward China.
