Taiwanese troops fight back invading forces attempting to seize the Taoyuan Airport. That was the scenario being practiced on Wednesday, the third day of the yearly Han Kuang exercises carried out by the Taiwanese military. Taoyuan Airport’s airspace was restricted for one hour in the morning to allow for the exercises.
The Taoyuan Airport is the largest in Taiwan, making it a key piece of infrastructure to defend. Military experts such as Shih Hsiao-wei (施孝瑋) say that if an invading force were able to take over the airport it would be able to bring in a large number of supplies and reinforcements, making its defense critical.
Beyond the airport, exercises were also carried out at Taipei Main Station, where soldiers simulated responding to armed attackers taking hostages. Bomb squads also simulated removing explosives from the station.
Late Tuesday night, local police and fire departments were included in a simulation of a blockade of the Wanban Bridge in Taipei. The Han Kuang exercises will continue through Friday.
