As Typhoon Khanun looms in the waters east of the island, fishing boats are heading back to the harbor to avoid potential risks from the incoming storm. Rain, wind, and waves have already started to make their presence felt in the Northeast region.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, Khanun’s path remains uncertain, but a maritime warning could be issued as early as 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Forecasts from different countries diverge significantly. The U.K. predicts a westward trajectory, while the U.S. Navy and Canada expect an eastward turn followed by a turn to the north. Europe and the U.S. Global Forecast System, on the other hand, foresee a turn to the east and then a sharp return westward. Japan's prediction places the typhoon heading north.

The typhoon's trajectory remains uncertain due to its unique positioning between two high-pressure systems. The key factor lies in observing the changes in air pressure systems in the next few days, particularly the formation of a saddle-shaped field with high pressure to the east and west and low-pressure to the north and south.

Meteorological expert Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) says there is lots of room for change in the coming days. This situation raises memories of Typhoon Nari's impact on Taiwan back in 2001.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Khanun's path, the public is advised to stay vigilant and keep an eye on the typhoon's direction. With the added concern of coinciding with a high tide, people should be cautious of potential seawater flooding. Land alerts have not been ruled out. As Typhoon Khanun approaches make sure to stay alert to any updates and safety precautions.
