Taiwan’s government will donate US$5 million to two Slovak charities planning reconstruction projects in Ukraine. Taiwanese representative to Slovakia David Lee (李南陽) signed a cooperation agreement with the two organizations at the Slovak Prime Minister's office in Bratislava on Tuesday.
Elena Kohútiková, Slovak Prime Minister's Council of Advisors Chairwoman, presided over the signing ceremony between Taiwan, the Open Society Foundation, and Pontis Foundation. Kohútiková said Taiwan is the first foreign government to cooperate with Slovakia this year in bringing aid to Ukraine. Last year, Taiwan donated US$2.1 million for humanitarian aid to Ukraine in cooperation with the Slovak government. The new donation will prioritize rebuilding medical and educational facilities in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine.
In his speech, Lee emphasized that Taiwan and Slovakia share similar ideas and values. Lee also thanked the Slovak government for supporting and cooperating with Taiwan to assist Ukraine and prevent the expansion of global authoritarianism.
