A number of rescue teams are working hard to evacuate people from mudslides and flooding due to recent heavy rains brought by Typhoon Khanun.

Damage from recent heavy rains is obvious in Nanfeng Village in Nantou County. Aerial footage of a main street shows a convenience store and gas station buried by mudslides. Li-Hsing Industrial Park’s main road has also been rendered impassable by rocks and debris that have broken through the mountain wall.

70-80 tourists are reportedly stranded in the Lushan Hot Springs area without electricity, as roads have all become fast-flowing streams and power lines have fallen. Rescue teams are attempting to cross the flooded areas to assist, but they are having difficulty with the dangerous depth and speed of the water.

In Nanfeng Village, locals have lost their homes. A mother and her two-month-old child are being airlifted out of harm’s way to a temporary shelter. The baby sleeps peacefully, not knowing that their family has no house to return to.

More supplies are needed, particularly infant formula and children’s clothing, as most villagers have been evacuated with limited supplies. Locals are hoping that roads can be cleared and more supplies can arrive as soon as possible.
