Former Japanese Prime Minister and Vice President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Taro Aso is currently in Taiwan for an official visit. His agenda on Wednesday included meetings with prominent Taiwanese businessmen and politicians.

Founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Foxconn Terry Gou (郭台銘) was seen entering the Regent Taipei hotel to meet with former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Wednesday. In their one-hour conversation, Aso expressed his concern over a potential Taiwan conflict. Gou explained his proposal for peaceful cross-strait relations.

The day before, Aso gave a speech at an international security forum in Taipei. He said that the most important task for countries like Japan, the United States, and Taiwan is to prevent war. He added that they should all be prepared to put very strong deterrence into action.

Later, Aso met with Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) and exchanged greetings and gifts, including comic books for Aso who is a fan of manga. Aso said that he and his grandfather had visited Taiwan in the 1960s, and even met with the Mayor’s great-grandfather, Chiang Kai-shek.

Aso and other members of a Japanese delegation were even able to squeeze in a visit with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文).
