The 39th Asian International Stamp Exhibition opens in Taipei on Friday morning, featuring some of the most valuable stamp collections from across the world. The exhibition will run until next Tuesday, displaying the world’s most expensive stamp.
The NT$260 million (US$8.6 million) British Guiana One-Cent Black on Magenta is the exhibition’s highlight. Only three to four people can view the stamp at a time in an independent exhibition room, with professional guides to explain its history.
Many precious domestic and foreign stamp collections are on display, including classic historical stamps from Taiwan and a selection of 21 past winners of the Asia International Stamp Awards.
Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) also attended the opening ceremony. During his speech, Chen revealed that he liked collecting stamps when he was a child and still gets the stamp collection issued by Chunghwa Post every year. He said he hopes that Taiwanese people can find the time to visit the interesting exhibition.
Chen pointed out that the exhibition was originally scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to COVID-19. He thanked Chunghwa Post for their contributions to epidemic prevention and noted two commemorative stamp sets; one showing joint epidemic prevention between Taiwan and other countries, and the other, created by Jimmy Liao, a famous illustrator, thanking the healthcare workers for their service during the pandemic.
