Kaohsiung City woke up to a deluge today as a low-pressure belt swept through the area, triggering heavy thunderstorms and causing widespread flooding in many parts of the city. The downpour commenced at 5:00 a.m. and persisted well into working hours, leaving residents facing a challenging commute.
As of 10:00 a.m.136 millimeters of rainfall had accumulated in the Sanmin District and the impact was visible on the streets. As the torrential rain flooded roads and highways, many drivers and motorcyclists attempted to navigate through the waterlogged streets. The water level on Benguan Road in Sanmin District rose to such heights that motorcycles seemed to morph into jet skis. Several vehicles were immobilized by the floodwaters leaving motorists stranded.
A small lake formed on the road outside of Dongguang Elementary School and on the Jiuru Interchange ramp onto National Freeway 1 leading to traffic chaos with some vehicles attempting to persevere through the water and others stranded, unable to move forward or retreat.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) visited the flood-affected Sanmin District to assess the situation firsthand, particularly focusing on the flooded Benguan Road. The city government established a heavy rain emergency response center and the Water Resources Bureau was also called into action to oversee and manage the water levels throughout the urban area.
After more than five hours, the relentless rain gradually subsided and the floodwaters began receding. The aftermath of the early morning downpour, however, left many office workers and commuters wet and frustrated, reflecting the chaos that can unfold when nature's forces collide with urban life.
