The iconic Tai Hwa ferry "臺華輪" embarked on its final voyage on Wednesday. The ferry first set sail in 1978 and has sailed the Kaohsiung-Penghu route for an impressive 34 years. The ferry exceeded its expected years of service, and ferry runner Taiwan Navigation had no choice but to announce the end of the ferry's seafaring duty on August 23.

With the resounding sound of the ship's horn, the ferry set sail on its final trip to Penghu. Crew members were reluctant to say goodbye. Passengers hurriedly boarded, knowing that this would be their last chance to experience a journey aboard the Tai Hwa.

The ship's captain expressed gratitude to the passengers for being part of the journey that spanned decades.

One of Tai Hwa’s crew says she was thankful for the opportunities the Tai Hwa has provided for her to earn a living over the years. She reminisced about onboard events like barbecues and karaoke that brought joy to both passengers and crew members alike.

A traveler from Taichung recalled an overnight trip she took on the Tai Hwa during a typhoon, while others fondly recalled their experiences in different cabins throughout the years.

The Tai Hwa has a rich history, not only transporting passengers but even transporting national treasures from the National Palace Museum to Penghu for exhibition.

The final voyage was filled with nostalgia, but the baton will now be handed to the new Penghu ferry "澎湖輪," which is set to embark on its maiden voyage on September 5.
