Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying and Wang Tzu-wei advance to quarterfinals of Badminton World Championship

Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) defeated Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in the top 16 of the women's singles in the Badminton World Championships in Copenhagen on Thursday, successfully breaking into the top eight. 

Tai won with scores of 21-18 and 21-17. However, after the match, Tai said she was not particularly satisfied with her overall performance and hoped to make fewer errors, she also said the wind in the stadium was very strong. 

In the quarterfinals, Tai will face former world champion and Spanish player Carolina Marin. The two players have a history of rivalry, having met 19 times in the past, with Tai holding a slight advantage of 10 wins to nine losses.

In the men's singles, Wang Tzu-wei (王子維) defeated Chinese player Li Shifeng (李詩灃) with scores of 21-15 and 21-14 also advancing into the top eight, making the win his best result in the World Championships thus far.


Wang will face Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the quarterfinals. Vitidsarn is currently ranked third in the world and the two athletes have played against each other three times in the past.
