President Tsai welcomes new Marshall Islands ambassador to Taiwan

Newly appointed Marshall Islands Ambassador to Taiwan Anjanette Kattil presented her letter of credence to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Wednesday.

In her welcome remarks, President Tsai expressed her gratitude to the Republic of Marshall Islands for its unwavering support for Taiwan’s participation at various international venues. She highlighted Taiwan’s cooperation with the Republic of Marshall Islands in the areas of medicine, agriculture, and education which has been consistently reinforced over the years.

Tsai pointed out that Taiwan and the Marshall Islands are both island countries that face mutual challenges posed by global warming and rising sea levels. She referred to the Joint Statement on Combating Climate Change signed with Tuvalu, Palau, Nauru, and the Marshall Islands and said she looks forward to further exchanges on the matter.

In response, Katill mentioned the unique connection Taiwan and the Marshall Islands share in their Austraunesian cultural heritage. She welcomed the opportunity to return to Taiwan and named Taiwan as her second home. 

She said that the shared values of democracy, rule of law, human rights, and peace will make the friendship between the two countries stronger. She emphasized that the Marshall Islands will continue to support Taiwan in the pursuit of its sovereignty and democratic values.
