The National Fire Agency’s rescue team arrived in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday for a six day training on the invitation from the Tokyo city government in light of the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto earthquake. That’s the word from Taiwan’s National Fire Agency on Friday.

This year, the Tokyo city government is collaborating with local and international search and rescue teams to conduct comprehensive disaster prevention training. This includes earthquake drills for capital cities, as well as joint exercises with the Tokyo Fire Department.

This is not the first time Taiwan has exchanged experiences with Japan on disaster relief operations. In February, Taiwan’s Fire Agency sent its Special Search and Rescue Team to Turkey following the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake. The team went on to conduct combined training with the Tokyo Fire Department to understand Japan's international humanitarian rescue and training modes, as well as their experience of disaster relief in Turkey.

Taiwan’s Fire Agency pointed out that via international exchange, Taiwan can learn from other countries’ technology and rescue procedures. The agency says they hope to establish a network with Japan for further collaboration to jointly enhance search and rescue capabilities.
