Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te (賴清德) presented his National Project of Hope at a press conference on Wednesday. The project will serve as his national policy blueprint should he be elected as Taiwan’s next president in 2024.
Three think tanks, namely the New Frontier Future Foundation, the Taiwan Think Tank, and the Foundation for Future Generations, collaborated on the project and gathered the opinions of more than 200 scholars, representatives from industries and NGOs to make policy recommendations for Lai.
Lai said that the project epitomizes his reflections about Taiwan’s future. He explained that the project is a compilation of lessons he has learned. He referred to his beginnings as a medical doctor and his experience in politics for the past 30 years.
Lai said his policy’s foundation consists of President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) four commitments and his four pillars for peace and prosperity as outlined in his Wall Street Journal op-ed. He reiterated his hopes for building a democratic, innovative, and sustainable future for Taiwan.
Lai emphasized that Taiwan should tackle challenges with confidence and ambition. He sees crises as opportunities for growth and transformation. He also said he looks forward to working with the Taiwanese people for the progress of the country.
