The foreign ministry announced a donation of US$500 thousand for relief efforts in Morocco after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Marrakech on August 8. That’s according to a news release by the foreign ministry on Sunday.

The massive earthquake has caused more than 2,000 injuries and the death toll has also exceeded 2,000 people. The foreign ministry paid its condolences to Morocco immediately after the destruction occurred and instructed the representative office in France to express Taiwan’s concern and sympathies. It also said that the Taiwanese government will send special search and rescue teams to aid if necessary.

The foreign ministry stated that the Taiwanese government hopes to provide assistance to the Moroccan people to rebuild their homelands and return to normal life as soon as possible. The donation will be transferred through a third party as Taiwan and Morocco currently do not have formal diplomatic relations.
