The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced on Tuesday that the 16th presidential and vice presidential election and the 11th Legislative Yuan election will be held on January 13, 2024. The CEC estimates approximately 19.5 million people will vote, with over 1 million first-time voters. The CEC will set up more than 17 thousand polling stations across the country.
CEC Chairperson Lee Chin-yung (李進勇) says that there will be three ballots in the 2024 general election: one for president and vice president, one for regional or Indigenous legislators, and one for political parties. Parties that receive 5% or more of the votes, will be eligible to pick 34 seats for legislators.
The registration period for presidential and vice-presidential candidates will be from November 20 to November 24 of this year. Candidates can apply for registration through political party nominations or by collecting signatures.
Lee says that Taiwan’s citizens living overseas may apply to return to Taiwan to vote in the 2024 elections. According to the law, citizens who have not entered Taiwan in two years will need to reregister their household. Applications to vote can be registered from September 12 to December 4. Applicants may apply at the household registration office in their hometown.
