Taipei Canadian Trade Office’s director of trade and investment, Ed Jager, expressed confidence that a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) between Taiwan and Canada can be signed by the end of this year.
Saying that Taiwan is a key part of Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy, he revealed that negotiations were progressing smoothly during a market information session hosted by the Vancouver Board of Trade on Tuesday.
Jager also expressed optimism about Taiwan’s participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), saying that Taiwan meets the membership criteria.
Taiwan applied to join the CPTPP in September 2021 and has lobbied for support for its participation in the trade bloc, of which Canada will be assuming chairmanship next year. The CPTPP is a free trade agreement between 12 member countries.
