Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) attended a reception commemorating Guatemala’s 202 years of independence on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮 ) and Guatemalan Ambassador to Taiwan, Oscar Padilla Lam also attended the event, hosted by the Central America Trade Office in Taipei.

In his speech, Chen drew parallels between Guatemala and Taiwan, saying that both countries have gone through the process of democratization and understand the value of freedom and democracy.

Chen says the two heads of state have exchanged visits this year, and both sides have cooperated in a wide range of fields such as medicine and health, economy and trade, talent cultivation, and infrastructure. He says that the two countries will continue to work together to enhance the well-being of the people of both countries.

Chen called Guatemala a solid ally and thanked the country for its friendship and firm support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. He says Taiwan will continue to work with democratic partners to expand cooperation, maintain regional stability, and contribute to prosperity and development.

Guatemala declared its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821, as the Captaincy General of Guatemala. The Captaincy’s territory included the modern-day countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, as well as the Mexican State of Chiapas.
