Jason Jung (莊吉生) and Hsu Yu-hsiou (許育修) brought home Taiwan’s first gold medal in men’s doubles tennis at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Friday. The pair, playing for Chinese Taipei, defeated India’s Saketh Myneni and Ramanathan Ramkumar.
Both teams had a low first serve success rate in the first set, but in the second serve, Jung and Hsu outperformed the Indian pair. Jung and Hsu prevailed 6-4 in the first set in spite of their counterparts’ scoring four aces.
The two sides held tightly to their service games in the second set, leading to a contested match. Jung scored a break and gained a 5-4 lead, changing the course of the competition. In the last match point, Jung’s volley resulted in the opponent’s return to veer out of bounds. The Taiwanese team scored 6-4 in the second set, securing Taiwan’s 5th gold medal for the 2023 Asian Games.
