The Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany Managing Director Anna Kaminsky led a delegation to visit the Cabinet for an exchange on transitional justice issues on Thursday.
In his welcoming remarks, Minister without Portfolio Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) said that the Taiwanese government has been working to provide public access to political archival records, redress judicial and administrative wrongs, and recover ill-gotten party assets. He added that a dedicated foundation has been established to deal with compensation and restore victim’s rights. He also pointed out that the government has started to promote comprehensive education in transitional justice and emphasized that more efforts are still needed to remove authoritarian symbols and identify perpetrators.
Kaminski said in her remarks that Germany applauds the Taiwan government’s devotion in confronting issues and that the results have been remarkable despite beginning measures only recently.
Lo stated that the delegation’s visit is an invaluable opportunity for Taiwan to learn how Germany overcomes the conundrums of promoting transitional justice. He said he looks forward to further exchanges in the future between Germany and Taiwan.
