The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Taipei released its 2023 white paper on policy recommendations, specifically mentioning TSMC's factory in Kumamoto and a research and development center in Tsukuba. The white paper pointed out that Taiwan is an extremely important global semiconductor producer and that Japan is a major consumer.
In response to the report, National Development Council (NDC) Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) said that Taiwan's investment in Japan has accelerated in recent years. He noted that TSMC's investment in Kumamoto is worth over US$8.6 billion. Kung also said that the factory is on track to begin production in 2024.
Kung said that TSMC's investments in Japan not only demonstrate the continuous deepening trade and investment ties between Taiwan and Japan but also serve as an example of how these two countries can combine their semiconductor advantages and comprehensive efficiency.
