China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced on Monday that it will be extending its investigation of Taiwan’s trade barriers another three months. The MOC said the investigation, initially launched in April, was supposed to be completed before mid-October, but due to complexities, it will now be extended to January 12, 2024.

In response to the extension, Taiwan’s Economic Affairs Ministry said that it has always maintained a transparent stance. It said that it is willing to negotiate with China under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework.

The ministry added that it will also assist local businesses by expanding and increasing attendance in overseas exhibitions and utilizing other practices to diversify risk and market share. This not only avoids unfavorable conditions set by China but also provides for additional business opportunities. It further emphasized that regardless of future developments, it will continue to assist industries to face the challenges together.

The ministry stated in August that China’s accusation and investigation of trade barriers is politically motivated. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs council issued similar statements, pointing out the time frame of the investigation is right before the 2024 presidential elections, which will be held on Jan. 13.
