Cross-strait tourism unlikely to happen this year: transportation minister

Transportation and Communications Minister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國財) has said Mainland Chinese tourists will not be visiting Taiwan this year. This was in response to Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Fu Kun-chi’s (傅崐萁) inquiry during a meeting with the Legislative Yuan on Monday.

Fu asked when Mainland Chinese tourists can visit Taiwan. Wang responded that private sources tell him it is unlikely for Mainland Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan this year. He says whether this will change will be based on the situation next year. He emphasized that the Taiwan side has already shown goodwill on the matter but has yet to receive a response from the Chinese side.

The Mainland Affairs Council announced last August that it would conditionally lift its travel ban on Mainland Chinese tourists. It is expected that cross-strait tourism will resume, pending the response from China.
