Taiwan drivers are used to dealing with various road hazards, but one street in Taichung had a rather unusual obstacle to avoid on Wednesday.

Soldiers were seen on the streets of Taichung’s Xitun District Wednesday morning using brooms to clean sawdust from the street and putting out traffic cones to warn drivers. The cause? Oil - leaked onto the street from an M60A3 tank of the 586th Armored Brigade.
One of the soldiers says the tank was coming out of a base for a routine reconnaissance mission when it started leaking oil. The soldiers were quickly dispatched to help clear the oil with sawdust.
Major General Hu Jui-hsun (胡瑞訓) says that he noticed the tank was having an issue and pulled over to check the vehicle. He discovered that an oil pipe under the tank had ruptured, leaving an oil pool of about 30 square centimeters on the road.
Hu says the tank movement was unrelated to the ongoing week-long Chang Ching (長青), or “evergreen,” military exercises. He says the military will strengthen its tank maintenance following the incident and will investigate the exact cause of the pipe rupture.
