David Adeang has been elected as Nauru’s new president as of Monday. Taiwan’s ambassador to Nauru has sent congratulations on behalf of Taiwan and the Foreign Ministry has emphasized that it will maintain close contact with the new Nauru government.

As reported last week, previous Nauru president Russ Kun was ousted from office in a legislature vote of no confidence on last Wednesday. A new vote to elect a new president was held immediately in accordance with the country’s constitution.

The Foreign Ministry states that Adeang is currently the most senior member of the Parliament in Nauru. He has served as speaker of parliament, minister of justice, minister of foreign trade, minister of finance, minister of Nauru Airlines, and minister of multiculturalism. In 2005, Adeang accompanied the then-Nauru President Ludwig Scotty to Taiwan to sign a communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic ties. The Foreign Ministry says that the friendship between the two island nations is stable with frequent high-level visits and the implementation of bilateral cooperation plans.
