Sometimes funny videos crop up on YouTube talking about surnames due to how rare they have become. This video is saying that the person’s surname is Shi (石), an uncommon last name. This may make you wonder what the most common surnames are in Taiwan.

Well, in answer to that question, Taiwan’s Interior Ministry announced the latest statistics on the most prevalent surnames on Monday. In fact, out of the over 23 million Taiwanese, 12.33 million or 52.79% have the most common last names.

Can you guess what they are?

According to the ministry, the 10 most mainstream surnames in Taiwan are Chen (陳), Lin (林), Huang (黃), Chang (張), Lee (李), Wang (王), Wu (吳), Liu (劉), Tsai (蔡) and Yang (楊). Out of these surnames, the number of people surnamed Chen came out as the most prevalent, followed by Lin then Huang.

Some people like to stand out but depending on your surname, this just might make you one of the crowd.
