Tainan is well-known across Taiwan for its delicious food and wide array of delectable dishes. Locals can enjoy culinary delights like beef noodle soup, fried mackerel soup, savory porridge, steamed pork buns, and spring rolls anytime they like. However, their indulgence comes at the price of their waistlines, leading to high obesity rates.
Statistics reveal that the percentage of people in Tainan classified as overweight or obese has surpassed 43% over the past five years, exceeding the rates of other cities. Residents attribute the weight gain to the abundance of tempting, fried, and sugar-laden foods, including sugary beverages.
This data has resonated with many in the city, although some have expressed their disbelief. One resident says he doesn't believe he is overweight, but his friends are telling him he's putting on weight by the day. A recent survey also found that more than 63% of Tainan's residents do not perceive themselves as overweight but instead consider themselves to be very healthy. Despite this, Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) has announced plans to implement obesity reduction education in response to the rising obesity rates.
So remember that as you feast on Tainan’s mouthwatering dishes, moderation may be the key to keeping your health in check.
