Premier Chen Chien-jen urged China on Friday to stop destabilizing the Taiwan Strait after 20 Chinese warplanes were detected crossing the strait’s median line on Thursday.
The warplanes were detected by the Defense Ministry one day after naval vessels from the United States and Canada transited through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday. A statement from the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet said that the transit was part of the U.S. commitment to operate wherever international law allows.
Chen says he is aware of the movements by China’s military, and that the national security agencies are following the situation closely. He adds that Taiwan will continue to work with relevant countries to continue to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
