The Health Ministry will invest NT$48 billion (US$1.5 billion) over the next five years to elevate disability services in Taiwan, according to Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁). Chen stated this during a meeting with the recipients of the Chinese Mercy Love Association’s 26th Great Love Awards, which honors individuals with disabilities and their families for inspiring and selfless contributions.
During the meeting, Chen commended this year's award winners saying that they are creating an optimistic and altruistic atmosphere in society. He added that the government is actively focused on improving the rights and interests of people with various disabilities, citing the 1.2 million disabled individuals in Taiwan.
Chen said the government will collaborate with local and civil groups on a four-pronged strategy that includes understanding the needs of families with disabilities, enriching resources and networks, enhancing community-based services, diversifying and strengthening service agencies, and improving labor conditions. Chen expressed the government's commitment to creating a friendly and barrier-free environment for people with disabilities.
