Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee (李淳) attended the opening ceremony of the Berlin Security Conference (BSC) and delivered a keynote speech at the event on Wednesday.

In his speech, Lee emphasized that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a matter of security for the world and that it is important for democracies to unite in support of countries like Ukraine or Taiwan that are threatened by aggression from authoritarian regimes. Lee called for collective security forces to work together to deter China's ambitions. He added that a direct impact would be felt in the global supply chain and civilian life in Europe, should military conflict occur across the Taiwan Strait.

Lee shared that Taiwan is familiar with China’s diplomatic suppression, military provocation, and economic coercion and has learned how to tackle challenges of misinformation, economic pressure, and cyberattacks from China. Lee says Taiwan is willing to share its experiences and reiterates that Taiwan and its European friends share common values of freedom and democracy.

According to a press release by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, Lee is the first Taiwanese to be invited to be a keynote speaker at the BSC, which is one of the most important security conferences in Europe. The ministry adds that the BSC invites politicians and experts in national security, diplomacy and economics to attend the event.
