Due to the rarity of snowfall in Taiwan, many people head to the highest mountains in cold weather hoping to get a slice of the winter life.

Winter ice and snow are not often seen or heard in subtropical Taiwan, but visitors to the Wuling mountain pass this morning were lucky enough to witness a rare event: hail pellets falling from the sky.
On this foggy morning at around 7 am, the temperature was about 4 degrees Celsius with 96% relative humidity. With these conditions, several people arrived on the pass hoping to catch a glimpse of snowfall.
One woman says she had been waiting since midnight hoping to see snow.
Another couple says they are very happy to finally see the hail as it feels like a small payoff for the wait, and hope that more snow or hail will fall later in the day.
In the end, the hail in the pass lasted only about three minutes. However, photos from the area show trees covered in a layer of frost, giving them an icy beauty.
